Ixora margaretae

     A marvelous and wonderfully odd flowering tree from the island of New Caledonia. Unlike more well known Ixora that are used as tropical hedges, I. margaretae is a slender tree that can reach a height of 10-15ft. It is monopodial in habit, meaning that it has a tall, unbranched trunk that’s topped with leaves, like a palm tree! Whatmore, the flowers are borne directly out of the trunk, covering it like a colorful wreath on Dia de Los Muertos. Definitely worth a Google Image search.

     This is a slow-growing tree that appreciates subtropical to tropical conditions. The plant I am offering is a seedling that is just starting to size up. This is a very rare tree in nature and cultivation, and something you do not want to miss in your collection. 

     Fun fact: This species was previously classified in its own genus Captaincookia, named after the famous British naval explorer Captain James Cook.
