Whisk Fern / Psilotum nudum
The plant picture is the plant being sold. Shipped in a 4” pot with soil.
Psilotum nudum, also known as the Whisk Fern, gets its apt name from its small, wiry green stems. What’s interesting about this fern is its morphology, or lack thereof. It produces no true leaves or true roots. Rather, the stem has taken over all normal functions of the plant. It even bears the yellow, ball-shaped structures that produce the spores. This highly reduced form has been advantageous for the plant, as it can be found throughout the world’s tropical regions and is even considered a weed in some places. But as a potted specimen, it makes a wonderful, textural curiosity. This is tolerant of a wide variety of conditions, from shade, to part sun, and even full sun once established. Keep the media moist for best growth, although it is tolerant of dry conditions. Truly a remarkable plant for the odd-plant lover.
