Griffinia are a group of understory flowering bulbs that can be found in the Atlantic Rainforest and seasonally dry areas of Brazil. Although they are closely related to Amaryllis, they differ greatly in their care and flowers. Griffinia are evergreen and do not need a period of dormancy to bloom. Rather, they freely flower about 2 to 3 times a year under ideal conditions. Many of them profusely pup and will create a nice patch of plants in time. Griffinia are one of the few bulb plants that will flower in a windowsill with very little care, making them an great addition for the indoor collector. Give them bright, indirect light and evenly moist (but not wet) media for best results.

Griffinia espiritensis is an excellent beginner plant for those interested in Griffinia or bulb plants in general. The lush, lance-shaped leaves are profuse and repeatedly sprout as this plant produces new offsets. The leaves are rather thin and will droop under hot or direct sun conditions, so keep them in the shade. The blue-lilac flowers appear on a 6” stalk above the foliage, swaying in the air for all to see. They are relatively large for a Grififnia. On large specimens you can expect multiple bloom cycles in the same year, indoors! Definitely an underrated plant.
