Unfortunately it is much too expensive to send a long box.

The plant pictured is the plant for sale. Shipped in a 6”HB. Notice slight cosmetic damage on the oldest frond. The last photo is of a reference plant, NFS.

Goniophlebium subauriculatum (syn. Polypodium subauriculatum) is a marvelous tropical fern rare in cultivation in the USA and a holy grail amongst fern enthusiasts. This species is often confused for a type of Sword Fern or Boston Fern (Nephrolepis sp.), but it is better in every way. Each frond can reach 8 feet in length, with each pinna (leaflet) reaching 6 inches. The long, lacy fronds coupled with the wide spacing of the pinna gives this plant an airy and graceful appearance. With proper care, it can quickly grow into an elegant specimen.

This is an understory plant that enjoys bright, indirect light, away from strong direct sunlight. High humidity promotes faster growth, but it will also grow well in ambient household humidity. Keep the potting mix constantly moist. I use a mix of high quality, peat-based media amended with perlite and fine pine bark. This plant is very sensitive to low temperatures, as anything below 50F will result in frond damage.

This species has a widespread distribution in South Asia, the Pacific Islands, and Australia. However, it has reached great popularity on the other side of the world, in Brazil. There it goes by the name of Samambaia de Metro (Meter Fern) and Samambaia Chorona (Weeping Fern). Even the great landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx had it growing in his home. It’s a mystery why it is not more cultivated in the USA.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0966/6622/2955/files/7EEBFEB7-CD72-439B-B47A-C9287B6EB42C.jpg?v=1793120494
