This is a lowland fern species that can be found throughout the tropical Americas, but its northern range extends into the cypress swamps of the Fakahatchee Strand in the southern tip of Florida.  \u003cbr\u003e     This fern is unusual in that it resembles a grass more so than anything else. The give away are the yellow sori underneath the narrow fronds. This plant produces a short rhizome that is constantly putting out new fronds, which can exceed 20” in length. Grow this plant mounted or in a pot. Unlike more well known Ixora that are used as tropical hedges, I. margaretae is a slender tree that can reach a height of 10-15ft. It is monopodial in habit, meaning that it has a tall, unbranched trunk that’s topped with leaves, like a palm tree! Whatmore, the flowers are borne directly out of the trunk, covering it like a colorful wreath on Dia de Los Muertos. In the case of Caudex Ant Plants, the plant provides a shelter for ants within the natural cavities of its base stem, in exchange for the organic nutrients that the ants provide in the form of waste and debris, as well as protection in some cases. Almost all Ant Plants are epiphytes, serving arboreal ants. NOTE: Ant Plants DO NOT attract ants! The ants native to the US have no idea of these exotic plants from Asia and are about as interested in it as a plastic toy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e     Hydnophytum moseleyanum ‘Siasiada Village’ is a rare natural variety of the most common ant plant. This species is widespread and has a lot of variation outside of the TC clone you will find in the US. I find that the stems on this species are more upright and hold larger, wider leaves. The standout difference is the textured caudex. The epidermis is a fine network of cracks and scales, looking like a web of fissures. With age, it produces a prolific amount of entrance holes. My mother plant is five years old and has formed a round, egg-shaped base, compared to other H. moseleyanum that form a lumpy, somewhat flattened caudex. Like the common form, ‘Siasiada Village’ is much less prone to rot compared to other ant plants genera like Myrmecodia, Myrmephytum, etc.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e     Use a fast draining, orchid media mix and allow it to dry between waterings. This ‘basket’ is used as a way to catch leaf litter and debris, which then decomposes within the plant itself and provides nutrients to the fern. They grow as epiphytes in nature and reside high in tree canopies along with Staghorn Ferns and orchids. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e     Drynaria bonii is one of the more adorable and elusive basket ferns. While the fertile fronds can reach a foot long, the infertile shield fronds max out at two inches in height. It is quite prolific in producing shield fronds and quickly forms a basket, whether mounted or in a pot.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e     This species does go dormant in the colder months and will shed its green fertile fronds. Of course, the shield fronds will persist during that time. At that point it is important to let the plant fully dry out between waterings. When it sends out new fertile fronds in the spring, water and fertilize it regularly to support more growth. It needs good airflow and temperatures over 45F to survive.
